Supramonte Trekking & Nature

Discover the limestone plateaus, deep canyons, prehistoric fortresses, and old-growth holm-oak forests surrounding the town of Orgosolo.

The Limestone Plateau of Supramonte

The Supramonte of Orgosolo is a massive limestone highland located in central-eastern Sardinia. It features sharp limestone rocks, deep sinkholes, and steep cliffs. The geography has historically provided a refuge for local shepherds and bandits, keeping the landscape free of large-scale development.

The region has a distinct Mediterranean mountain microclimate, with hot, dry summers and cold, windy winters. Hikers can explore a network of ancient shepherd paths that connect traditional stone shelters (pinnetos), prehistoric ruins, and scenic viewpoints.

Monte Novo San Giovanni

Monte Novo San Giovanni is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Orgosolo highlands. It rises to an altitude of 1,316 meters. The mountain features flat limestone cliffs that tower over the surrounding holm-oak forests. The summit provides panoramic views of the Pratobello pastures and the Gennargentu mountain range.

A walking trail climbs to the top using stone steps carved into the rock face. The area is home to rare wildlife species, and quiet hikers can spot wild cats, Bonelli's eagles, and peregrine falcons nesting in the cliffs. The trail is exposed to the elements, so wind protection is useful even in the summer.

Sas Baddes Forest & Nuraghe Mereu

The state forest of Montes houses Sas Baddes, a primary holm-oak forest that has remained undisturbed by logging. The old trees form a closed canopy that keeps the forest floor cool and damp. This shaded environment provides a contrasting experience to the dry, rocky limestone plateaus nearby.

Deep within the forest stands Nuraghe Mereu, a prehistoric fortress built during the Bronze Age. The structure is constructed entirely from large, white limestone blocks. The central tower features a fully intact stone dome (thòlos). The fortress is positioned on a high ridge overlooking the Gorropu Canyon, serving as an ancient defensive lookout.

Trekking Safety & Gear Checklist

The Supramonte is a wild, remote area with limited mobile phone coverage and sparse water sources. Hikers must prepare thoroughly before starting their journey. Getting lost or running out of water are the primary risks on these trails.

Essential Packing Checklist

  • Water Supply: Bring at least 1.5 liters (~0.4 gallons) of water per person. There are no public fountains or natural springs along the high-altitude trails.
  • Footwear: Wear sturdy, high-traction hiking boots with ankle support. The limestone rocks are sharp and uneven.
  • Navigation: Download offline GPS maps before arrival. Mobile signal is weak or non-existent in the deep gorges.
  • Clothing: Wear layers to prepare for rapid temperature shifts, as high-altitude winds can lower perceived temperatures.

Hikers should also inform their hotel host or a local guide of their intended route and estimated return time. If you do not have off-road driving experience, book a private guided 4x4 excursion to access the deep trailheads of Montes and Gorropu safely.
